What is a Research Fellow?
The Undergraduate Research Scholars Program (URS) is dedicated to helping first- and second-year undergraduates get hands-on experience in research or other creative endeavors by working with UW faculty and research staff.
The Program also provides an opportunity for upper-class undergraduates to develop strong leadership skills by serving as Undergraduate Research Fellows. Each Fellow is assigned approximately 15 URS Scholars with whom they will meet regularly in small groups and individually. In addition to small group sessions, Fellows are required to attend a weekly staff meeting. The URS program provides substantial training and support during a week-long training module in the summer as well as regular staff meetings.
This position provides a $1,100 honorarium per semester in recognition of sustained effort and commitment.
PLEASE NOTE: All Fellows are required to register for a 2-credit seminar - Inter-LS 315: Paradigms and Process in Academic Inquiry during the Fall semester .
Responsibilities of a Research Fellow
- Attend regular staff meetings from 4:00-4:45 pm on Wednesday afternoons before small group meetings
- Partner with another Research Fellow to lead a small group of up to twenty URS students who will gather from 5:00-6:00 pm to discuss issues related to research and share strategies on successfully managing early college years
- Plan seminar objectives with co-leader and develop a syllabus for these activities during the training module
- Provide guidance to URS Scholars
- Keep regular contact with URS Scholars and monitor their research experience
- Serve as the link between the URS staff and the Scholars
- Represent URS at various campus functions
- Participate as needed in the general operation of the URS Program
Eligibility Requirements
- Four or more semesters of college by the beginning of appointment
- Good academic standing. (Please note that your transcript will be reviewed by the selection committee)
- Available on Wednesdays from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. in the fall and spring semesters
- Must be able to enroll in Inter-LS 315 for the Fall semester
- Experience in research
Preferred Experience/Skills
- Must be able to work in a flexible environment
- Should have experience in research or an independent creative endeavor and have experience in leadership roles
- Should be resourceful and able to take initiative
- Should have a good sense of the enrichment opportunities available on the UW campus or know how to find such information
- Should have strong skills in interpersonal communication.
- Some preference will be given to applicants with an interest in attending Graduate School (including Business, Law, and/or Medical School )
- Should be comfortable leading small groups of students
- Must be able to meet deadlines associated with URS administration and seminars
Interview
Selected candidates for the Research Fellow positions will have an interview in mid-March.
