Sonnets from 2004

Sonnet: Layaway

I first spotted you in a lone star state
I knew you'd never be ugly to me
Misplaced were we till united by fate
On a bus trip that consisted of three
Instantly you had me laughing and charmed
Blinding my eyes and invading my heart
Unprepared for these feelings you farmed
I wanted to tell you, but couldn't start
After our too-short trip that would've been
An eternity without each other
I realize that cupid had thrown his pin
And that I would never request another
But you're not ready to give your heart as pay
And you just want to hold me on lay' way

Are we all just walking shells of decay?
To be born and live whilst morals hollow
To blame another is to have self blamed
For 'tis the pattern of man to follow.
And amongst hate god then created love to manifest forgiveness and false hope
To each he gave life in genetic string from which we are then to bind and make rope.
What little I know from which little be to give strength to pour thoughts onto this page
Despite complex ways of our emotions we all end up in decay thus the same
Let this paper and word fall prone to fate
For these thoughts from this point will always stay.

Does thou not know such beauty as this place?
This place is home to attraction and charm.
Radiant sun that shines will strike thy face.
And to thy own soul, it can do no harm.
The glimmer and the sparkle of the sea
Broadcasts allurement into my eyes,
And reflects the warmth that's inside of me.
This is my one reason for me to rise.
Day in and day out, day out and day in,
I will travel to my serenity.
This indulgence of mine feels like a sin
Because this place brings sacred warmth to me.
But this warmth is only good while I stay
For if I leave it will vanish away.

Skin Deep

Is it my skin color that you so hate
Or is it my eyes that look upon you?
And with kind words you try to compensate,
Not showing you are the world's fool.
I find your presence to be so shallow
The hate that is obvious in your voice;
Yet I don't hate what I already know
And this decision has always been my choice:
You never put effort to understand
This vast, open world I am living in,
Your mindset laid out that which is preplanned
Continually judging by the skin
This world is composed with different shades:
Just open your eyes and not let it fade

Mexico

Where the roads are tough with traces of dust.
Sweat beats down my face from the sweltering sun.
A pueblo, my heart's devotion, I lust.
Memoria, take me back to all the fun.
I, in my chanclas, await by the door.
The mighty caballero sits so tall.
A handsome man on horse makes my heart soar.
And in the distance I hear the gallo's call.
Smell of tamales, que delicioso.
As the ninos play kickball in the street.
And the site of lime trees, oh-so hermoso.
No worries or cares, resisting the heat.
Mexico, my alma, only a sueno.
    Pueblo mio, como te extrano.
