  1. Am I eligible for SCE?

    You are eligible if:

    • you have been accepted as a first-semester student at the UW-Madison
    • you plan to enroll for the Fall semester
    • you must be admitted to the University of Wisconsin - Madison as an incoming freshman. Transfer students are not eligible.
  2. When Should I apply to SCE?

The application deadline is May 1, 2005; however, we encourage you to apply early, as soon as you receive the letter of acceptance from the Office of Admissions.

  3. When Does SCE Begin and End?

SCE runs during the regular summer session at UW-Madison and our move-in day is normally the third Saturday in June. SCE concludes the same Friday as the end of the regular 8-week summer session of each year.

  4. What Does the Program Provide?

The cost of housing (during the seven-week Summer Session), tuition (six credits), and books is covered for ALL participants in the program. However, students are expected to provide their own spending money.

It is essential for ALL applicants to submit financial aid forms (federal and UW-Madison) the spring before you would attend SCE. Although SCE is open to first-year UW-Madison students regardless of need, financial aid forms are required to ensure that all financial obligations are covered by all available resources and for documentation purposes. Late submission of the financial aid application may delay processing of your SCE application.

  5. What are the Application Procedures?

    Please see the application page

  6. Do I have to attend UW-Madison in order for me to participate in SCE?

You have to plan to attend UW-Madison for the fall. Your enrollment deposit (paid to the office of admissions) must be paid before the beginning of the program.

  7. Can I hold a job and participate in SCE at the same time?

No. We want you to be able to concentrate on high academic demands of taking six credits during the summer and to have time to participate in all SCE sponsored activities to fully take advantage of the program.

  8. Who do I call if I have specific questions?

Call SCE Coodinator Miguel Rosales at (608) 262-6463 or email sceinfo@lssaa.wisc.edu .

  9. Where will I live if I participate in SCE?

All SCE students live together in uw residence halls. There are three peer counselors living in the dorms as well.

  10. How many students participate in this program?

SCE 2003 had 48 students, SCE 2004 had 43 students and we expect 75 for 2005.

  11. What Else Should I Know?

The University expects all new first-year students to attend Student Orientation, Advising, and Registration (SOAR). SOAR is a two-day orientation workshop and provides a good introduction to the UW-Madison.You will meet campus advisors and acquire practical skills for your academic survival - skills such as learning basic degree requirements, planning your fall schedule, using the Timetable for course selection, and registering by touchtone telephone.

SCE does not cover the SOAR registration fee. However, all SCE participants will attend SOAR on the same date. You will be notified of this date at the time of your acceptance. SOAR registration information is included in the materials sent by the UW Office of Admissions.

The University also asks all new first-year students to take the UW-Madison placement tests in Math, English, and Foreign Languages. All SCE students will be required to take these tests during SOAR unless previously taken during regional testing.
