FELLOWSHIPS FOR SUMMER TRAVEL AND ENRICHMENT:
PHI KAPPA PHI THEODORE W. ZILLMAN SUMMER AWARDS
THE PROGRAM: The University of Wisconsin-Madison Chapter of Phi Kappa Phi, working through the University of Wisconsin Foundation, has created the Summer Scholars Program. These awards honor the memory of Theodore W. Zillman, long-time Dean of Students at Madison, one-time National President of Phi Kappa Phi, and a moving force behind the establishment of the Summer Awards Program. Contribution from the Zillman family in 1983 and additional contributions and fund raising since have helped to support this program.
The Summer Awards Program was begun in 1970 when the Madison Chapter celebrated its Golden Anniversary (1920-1970). Initial awards were granted in honor of Professor Benjamin H. Hibbard, a distinguished university economist who served as founder and first president of the Madison chapter.
PURPOSE: These awards are designed to encourage students from a variety of disciplines to enrich their educational programs through summer projects involving study, research, travel, and training that is not part of a formal curriculum. These projects may be carried out in the United States or abroad. Awards are not given to remain in Madison, nor can the award be used in a manner that provides university credits.
AMOUNT: As many as five or six awards will be given. Past awards have typically ranged between $300 and $1,500, with the amount of each award depending on the projects estimated costs and apparent merits.
QUALIFICATION: Any Phi Kappa Phi member or new inductee who is a registered undergraduate or graduate student on the Madison campus is eligible to apply.
Successful applications for recent summers have included proposals to enroll in CIC-sponsored programs on public health in Latin America; do volunteer work in an orphanage in Mexico; participate in various kinds of music camps; learn about European banking systems by doing unpaid internships in German and Swiss banks; get a close-up view of the British National Health Service by shadowing doctors at a general hospital in Wales; and conduct research projects on topics ranging from artworks in Italy to the marketing strategies of parking-lot vendors on a Phish tour.
