Banner: Schools of Hope - VISTA Literacy Project

The Schools of Hope Literacy Project is a Madison community effort. Coordinated by the United Way of Dane County, the Madison Metropolitan School District, and RSVP of Dane County; staffed by a team of dedicated AmeriCorps*VISTAs (Volunteers in Service to America); we unite to provide reading support to the children of Madison most in need of extra attention.

Schools of Hope arose out of a 1995 civic journalism project of the Wisconsin State Journal and WISC-TV that found a significant achievement gap between minority students and their white peers, and a similar gap between low-income students and their more affluent counterparts. A Leadership Team comprised of relevant parties throughout the community and chaired by the United Way of Dane County reviewed the findings and created Schools of Hope Literacy Project. The project was made possible in part by the federal AmeriCorps*VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) program which has consistently granted Schools of Hope with funds to hire a staff of volunteer coordinators.

The project aims to increase by 2005 the proportion of low-income students and students of color who score at or above standards on the Third Grade Reading Test. Schools of Hope is accomplishing this goal by placing volunteer coordinators in schools with high levels of need. These coordinators work with the schools and the community to recruit, train, and place volunteer literacy tutors in one-on-one and one-on-two settings.

A project like this, however, does not work without volunteers! If you are interested in volunteering, and have just one hour a week to devote to the cause, then call (608) 246-5481 or email schoolsofhope@rsvpdane.org and get involved!

PKP members who want to volunteer should feel free to contact me at this email adress (cschall@madison.k12.wi.us), or by phone at 204-6732. They can also contact our central office at SchoolsofHope@rsvpdane.org, or 246-5481.

Thanks for your help!
