Goals
seats remaining
This FIG will provide a broad overview of the religious
traditions of Asia with a more specific focus on the
history and certain aspects of Hinduism and Buddhism in South Asia.
"273 Religion in History and Culture: The East" is a survey of the
major religious traditions of Asia. "142 History of
South Asia" focuses on the history of South
Asia. The core course, "Yoga: Methods and Goals" traces
the development of religious practices subsumed under the name Yoga in South
Asia from early to modern times. In the Western world, some
aspects of Yoga, such as body postures, have attracted much attention, but the
larger cultural context of the phenomenon of Yoga and its philosophical
underpinnings have remained generally unknown to a wider audience. This course
explores Yoga techniques propagated in the ancient Indian texts, as well as
their adaptations in the Western world.
