The core seminar of this FIG, "Seeking Truth, Living with
Doubt," will combine science, the arts, and religion in discussion the search
for truth from several perspectives. Designed for "non-science majors," the
seminar will examine the nature of truth and of proof, standards for "truth" in
scientific reasoning, and the roles that the sciences play in society. Some of
the topics that students will explore include the role of freedom in science,
evolutionary theory and the role that physics plays, scientism and eugenics,
and the responsibilities of science and scientists. In "Introduction to
Zoology," students will come to understand how scientists in this discipline
approach problem solving in the areas of ecology, animal behavior, cell
structure, evolution, genetics, and physiology. "Religion in History and Culture: The East"
is an interdisciplinary survey of the major religious traditions of
