The Psychology of "South
Park" (reserved for Chadbourne residents) The main seminar course in this FIG will integrate psychology and rhetoric with an in-depth exploration of the social justice and social criticism themes illustrated within the popular show South Park. The main text for this course (South Park and Philosophy: You Know, I learned Something Today) explores classical positions in modern philosophy—logic, epistemology, ethics and morality, existentialism, utilitarianism, religious pluralism, etc—and will help link the social scientific inquiry to many broad themes in social philosophy which are implicit in social science. Students in this FIG will be encouraged to attend some of the University Distinguished Lecture Series events and perhaps other CRC-specific events, and link those experiences to the content of the class. Psychology 202, “Introduction to Psychology,” will provide a larger framework for discussing some aspects of human behavior, while English 100 will provide opportunities for reading, research, and writing about the topics discussed in the FIG seminar.
