Race in the United States The course will be a multi-media exploration into portrayals of racial and ethnic from the United States. Remember that multi-media includes books, and that race includes whiteness. Within the course students will consider portrayals from within various groups, and about them from the outside. Each week, students will have readings and visual texts to fuel class discussion. Students should be prepared to present readings and other materials a few times during the semester to the class. The course will be writing intensive. In addition to formal essays, students will also write reviews and observations. The goals of the course are to help students become better critical consumers, thinkers, and writers. Students’ skills will improve as they learn a bit about this history of some of these images.
