"Introduction to African-American Dramatic Literature," the "synthesizing course" in this FIG, will focus on the way African-American playwrights use drama to illustrate the social conditions under which black people live. You will examine the extent to which some of these playwrights rely on African oral traditions to build relationships between performers and their audiences. You will read plays that reflect themes explored in the second course in this FIG, "Problems of American Racial and Ethnic Minorities" and learn how to write critical essays about theatre and reviews of the live and video performances you will see throughout the semester. Then in the third course, "Introduction to Acting," you will have the opportunity to explore the processes actors undergo to create their roles and characters and make the texts come alive
