From teaching in the inner city of Chicago, to working on AIDS/HIV awareness in Africa, year-of-service programs offer rich and varied opportunities for people willing to dedicate a year (or more) of their lives to a worthwhile cause. Because there are such a wide variety of programs out there, you will likely find one that fits your personal interests and skills.
A great benefit of many year-of-service programs is that with little previous full-time work experience, recent college graduates may take on positions in nonprofit organizations with a great deal of responsibility, autonomy, challenges, and opportunities for training and professional growth.
Year-of-service programs weren’t necessarily designed to be entry points to the nonprofit sector, but they are very effective at not only introducing young professionals to the sector, and also getting them the skills they need to succeed there.
