AmeriCorps VISTA members assist in creating or expanding
programs and then mobilize community resources to sustain these programs. For
example, AmeriCorps VISTA members at a Habitat for Humanity chapter might be
the volunteer coordinators, grant writers, in-kind donation coordinators, etc.
At a school, they might be the people designing and coordinating the
after-school program.
AmeriCorps members must work full-time for one year during
which time they live at the economic level of the people they serve. Most
programs seek members with college degrees or at least three years of work
experience. Members receive training, a modest living allowance, relocation
expenses, student-loan forbearance, health coverage, and child care for those
who qualify. After successfully completing their term of service, they receive
an AmeriCorps Education Award.
Individuals interested in applying to AmeriCorps VISTA
should visit the official AmeriCorps website where you can search programs by your region or field of interest that are
currently recruiting new members. The largest recruitment is in the spring and
early summer; many AmeriCorps VISTA projects begin in late August.
AmeriCorps NCCC
AmeriCorps NCCC stands for National Civilian Community Corps, and is called “N-triple-C.” Drawn from the successful models of the Civilian Conservation Corps of the 1930s and the U.S. Military, AmeriCorps NCCC is built on the belief that civic responsibility is an inherent duty of all citizens and national service programs work effectively with local communities to address pressing needs.
AmeriCorps NCCC requires an intensive 10-month commitment.
Members serve in teams of ten to twelve and are assigned to projects throughout
the region served by their campus. AmeriCorps NCCC members serve communities in
every state but live, eat, and sleep as group based at one of three campuses
located in:
The Mission of AmeriCorps NCCC is to strengthen communities
and develop leaders through direct, team-based national and community service.
In partnership with nonprofit organizations, state and local agencies, and
faith-based and other community organizations, members complete service
projects throughout the region they are assigned. Many kinds of groups apply to
host AmeriCorps NCCC teams: community-based organizations – both faith-based
and secular, national nonprofits, schools, cities and towns, national and state
parks, and American Indian tribes.
Service projects typically last from six to eight weeks and address critical needs in education, public safety, the environment, and other unmet needs. Individuals interested in applying to AmeriCorps NCCC should visit the official AmeriCorps website.
