AAP Peer Mentoring

AAP is developing a year-long Peer Mentor Program which allows upper class AAP students to mentor a small group of incoming first year students by fostering academic and socio-cultural adjustment for first year AAP students.

Mission Statement: The purpose of the Peer Mentor Program is to create a sense of community and belonging for first-year AAP students and assist them in a successful transition from high school to college life as well as into the AAP Program. The program will also help mentors develop the personal and professional skills needed to successfully engage in meaningful interactions with people of different backgrounds, viewpoints and values. While helping first year students adjust to college life, peer mentors will develop personal and professional skills such as multi-cultural competence, problem-solving, and technology skills.

Components of our Peer Mentoring Program

First-year and first-year transfer students will:
  • Meet with their peer mentors twice a semester
  • Attend 1 community building and 1 community service event with their peer mentors each year
  • Communicate with their mentor through any form of communication in addition to required face-to-face meetings
  • Use their peer mentors as resources for adjusting to the UW-Madison campus
