Concurrent Enrollment Request
Concurrent enrollment (taking courses at two institutions during the same semester) requires dean’s permission.
The College of Letters & Science of the University of Wisconsin – Madison recognizes that in some circumstances, courses given by other institutions of higher learning (such as MATC) can complement the course of study offered by the residence program at UW Madison. Concurrent enrollment permission is needed only during the fall and spring terms. Concurrent enrollment permission is not needed for the summer term.
- Permission for concurrent enrollment should be obtained before enrolling in the outside institution’s course and prior to the 3rd week of classes (fall or spring term).
- Student must demonstrate that special circumstances are involved. Simple preference or convenience is not a valid reason for granting permission to take an outside course concurrently with a residence program at UW Madison.
- Students who are given permission are bound by the College of Letters and Science enrollment regulation of 18 credits maximum (which includes the total number of credits taken at both UW-Madison and the non residence institution). If the student will exceed 18 credits in a semester, the student must fill out a “credit overload request" online form.
- Courses taken through the UW-Extension program are considered concurrent enrollment. When permission to take Extension courses is given, the courses should be complete during the UW semester even though the Extension will allow more time.
