Study Abroad
We encourage students to experience other cultures, and in doing so, broaden their knowledge base. The two concerns regarding studying abroad that you should be aware of are transfer of credit(s) and residency requirements. Transfer credits taken at non-UW institutions are not guaranteed to transfer and will not be officially evaluated by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions until the courses are complete. You can estimate how things will transfer by comparing course descriptions and you can appeal how courses transfer here, but there are no guarantees.
In L&S, you need to have 30 credits taken through U.W.-Madison (either on campus or via a U.W.-Madison study abroad program) after your 90th credit. This is often called the "30 Credit Rule" or the "Residency Requirement." Consult a dean if you think your plans may cause problems in this regard. Fifteen (15) credits are required to be taken ON CAMPUS in your major or major department. This is sometimes referred to as the "study abroad stipulation".
Study abroad through non-UW programs can cause problems with the above requirements. Speak with a dean if you have any questions. Ideally, you would do this BEFORE you study abroad.
