What is involved in the re-entry process?

All students who have been absent from UW-Madison for a semester or more must complete a re-entry application, available from the Office of Admissions. Your re-entry application will not be processed by Admissions until they have received all relevant documentation. Students who have been dropped must also get an assistant dean's permission to return, see below for more details.

Visit the Undergraduate Admissions Office web site for information about the re-entry application process.

If you were dropped from the University, you will also need an assistant dean's permission to return. As a dropped student, if you have spent at least one year away from this campus, you may qualify for readmission. Readmission requests generally are considered during a personal appointment with a College of Letters and Science Assistant Dean located in Letters and Science Undergraduate Services. This meeting is to determine whether you are academically, emotionally, and financially ready to resume studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. A personal appointment is preferred; however, if circumstances do not permit one, you may request that your readmission be considered through correspondence. Please keep in mind that a personal appointment tends to be the most effective means for considering readmission requests.

Before Meeting with an Assistant Dean
The first step to readmission is to fill out our readmission statement form to address issues of reinstatement.

Students are dropped from the University, not as a punishment for poor grades, but as a means to encourage them to address the problems that are preventing them from making satisfactory academic progress. Consequently, the assistant dean considering your readmission request will want to know what has changed in your life that makes you feel you would succeed academically at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, if allowed to continue. Thus, you should take time prior to the meeting to consider what problems have impeded your academic success in the past, and whether the problems have been resolved or sufficiently brought under control thereby allowing you to succeed academically.

You should also take the time to assess your academic and career plans, review the Undergraduate Catalog, and meet with major advisors to help you with this process. If you have Incompletes that were granted in the last five years, you need to make arrangements to complete those courses before your readmission appointment. If you cannot finish your Incomplete(s) before your appointment, you should bring a letter from the professor(s) in charge of the course(s) detailing your plans to complete the remaining work.

Step 1: Meet with your academic advisor to discuss the readmission statement form

Step 2: After meeting with your academic advisor, make an appointment with a 70 Bascom Assistant Dean.

What to bring to the appointment
1. A completed readmission statement form with an academic advisor's verification that you've met and discussed your academic plans.

The assistant dean will use this statement as the basis for a discussion with you, and as an indicator of whether you now understand your problems and have realistically and effectively solved them.

2. In addition, you must submit transcripts of all academic work completed since you left the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Successful performance at another institution or removal of Incompletes is the most convincing evidence in support of a readmission request. You may also provide letters from employers, counselors, or other individuals to support your readmission request.

Scheduling an Appointment
When you are prepared to present your supporting material, call (608) 262-5858 or stop by Room 70, Bascom Hall, 500 Lincoln Drive to schedule an appointment with an assistant dean. Appointments are generally made a week in advance.

Students can seek readmission during the following windows for an upcoming term:

Fall and Summer Readmission March 15 - May 15
Spring Readmission September 15 - November 15

If you have any questions regarding readmission procedures, contact our 70Bascom Phone Service at (608) 262-5858. If you are an Academic Advancement Program (AAP) student, you should contact your AAP advisor/dean for readmission. Questions can be submitted by email. We do not schedule appointments over email.

All students applying for Readmissions must also apply for Reentry through the Office of Admissions. Visit the Office of Admissions web site for information about the re-entry application process.

I've not been dropped - I was away for personal reasons or study abroad

If you have been away from school for personal reasons or study abroad you only need to fill out the reentry application on the Office of Undergraduate Admission's web site and most likely will not need to meet with an assistant dean to discuss your readmission.
