What is Directed or Independent Study?

Directed Study and Independent Study are the same thing (sometimes even called Directed Reading), and it is an agreement between you and a student. Between the two of you, you decide how often to meet, what work the student will be required to complete, and how the student will be graded. A student can earn between 1 and 12 credits, though more than 4 credits is rare.

The professor decides whether to allow a student to register for the directed study and cannot do it without the consent of the professor. To obtain consent, the student will ask the professor.

Directed Study courses with a number ending in 98 (e.g., 198, 698) are carried on a Credit/No Credit (Cr/N) basis. No grades are awarded for these courses but the student earns degree credit. Not all departments offer Directed Study courses on a Cr/N basis. Directed Study courses ending in 99 (e.g., 299, 699) are letter graded and do count in the GPA.
