Summer Programs: Pre-Health
Pre-Med Research Programs
- The Vanderbilt Summer Science Academy (VSSA) offers research experiences for undergraduates who want to pursue a career in the biomedical sciences.
- The UT Southwestern Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences sponsors a summer program for students interested in cellular and molecular biology. The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) offers a stipend of $3500 for 10 weeks ($4750 if students need housing).
- University of Iowa Summer Undergraduate MSTP Research Program (SUMR) is an intensive experience for the individual interested in combined MD/PhD training for a career as a Physician Scientist.
- The College Summer Fellowship Program at the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and Dental Medicine is a program for students who are completing their junior year and who are interested in a MD/PhD degree.
- The Medical College of Wisconsin offers a Summer Program for Undergraduate Research (SPUR)in the biomedical sciences. This program is primarily intended for students interested in a PhD degree in biomedical sciences, but also encourages applicants interested in an MD/PhD degree.
- NIH offers a Summer Internship Program that connects students to research in a variety of health-related areas
- Summer Research Opportunities at Columbia University/Barnard College
- The Offices of Medical School Admissions and Multicultural Affairs at the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine offer two summer opportunities, PSOMER (Pritzker School of Medicine Experience in Research) and CAMP (Chicago Academic Medicine Program).
- Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation Summer Research Internship Program offers students research experiences in cardiology.
Pre-Med Public Health Programs
- Wisconsin Area Health Education Center Summer Internship (AHEC).
- Wisconsin Health Education Center System offers Wisconsin Express, a summer opportunity for health professions students to spend a week immersed in one of Wisconsin’s diverse communities learning about health care resources and challenges faced by a local and regional, urban or rural population.
- The National AHEC Organization offers information about programs nationwide. If you are not a Wisconsin resident, look here for AHEC programs in your state.
Pre-Med Preparatory Programs
- Johns Hopkins Summer Institute in Anatomy offers a four-week course in June.
- Georgetown Summer Medical Institute offers medical school courses for undergraduates.
- AAMC’s GREAT Committee maintains a list of links to Pre-Med summer preparatory programs at schools across the country.
Dentistry
- UCLA School of Dentistry offers several pre-dental courses during vacation breaks, including summer.
Podiatry
- Temple University School of Podiatric Medicine has a summer internship program (SIP). Interns attend workshops and seminars on podiatric medicine, as well as shadow and work with podiatric physicians in hospital, private practice, and outpatient clinic settings.
- The Pre-Professional Internship Program at the Ohio College of Podiatric Medicine (OCPM)
- CSPM Immersion Week (Ca. School of Podiatric Medicine) - Podiatric Summer Opportunity in the San Francisco Bay (Oakland) Area. CSPM Summer offers lectures on topics related to the foot and ankle, opportunities to shadow faculty and students in clinical settings, a full day of MCAT prep, and admissions/financial aid workshops.
Global Health Programs (International)
- Child Family Health International offers programs in Bolivia, Ecuador, India, Mexico, and South Africa for students who would like to do service work abroad and who are interested in global health issues.
- Medical Spanish program - Montana State University offers a Medical Spanish program in conjunction with Universidad Veritas in San Jose, Costa Rica.
- The Medical Spanish Program at the Universidad Autonoma de Guadalajara in Guadalajara, Mexico includes language learning and volunteering in local clinics.
- The University of Southern California’s - Somos Hermanos Student
