Optometry
Doctors of Optometry (O.D.) are primary care providers who examine, diagnose, treat and manage diseases of the visual system, the eye and associated structures. They are licensed to use diagnostic pharmaceuticals in every state and to prescribe therapeutic pharmaceuticals in most states. If you are interested in helping patients with eyeglasses, contact lenses, vision therapy, and other devices, look into a career in optometry.
What Do I Need to Study to Practice Optometry? To earn a Doctor of Optometry degree (O.D.), you must successfully complete a 4-year accredited program at a school or college of optometry. Coursework varies. However, in the first and second year, students study basic health sciences (anatomy, physiology, pathology, biochemistry, pharmacology and public health) optics and vision science. Students begin their clinical experience in a clinical simulation lab with fellow classmates serving as patients. Then, they train with "real" patients.
During the third year, students experience more "hands on" time with different patient populations. Specialty care services include contact lens, binocular and low vision, and surgical/medical treatment. Fourth year students continue their clinical training, which may include off-campus clinical rotations.
Not all schools require the completion of a baccalaureate degree. Most require a minimum of 90 semester hours. Pre-requirements include courses in biology, general and inorganic chemistry, biochemistry, mathematics and English. Take the Official Optometry Admission Test (OAT), and submit letters of recommendation. The Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry is pleased to announce the launching of the centralized application service for optometry (OptomCAS) for the 2009-2010 application cycle. Most schools are interested in candidates who have optometric experience and/or exposure. For a complete listing, check the Association of Schools and Colleges of Optometry (ASCO).
What is the OAT and How Do I Prepare to Take It?The OAT consists of four tests: Survey of the Natural Sciences (Biology, General and Organic Chemistry), Reading Comprehension, Physics and Quantitative Reasoning. Get more information about the OAT here.
