Summer Programs: Minority and Under-Represented Students: Pre-Health
Pre-Med Research Programs
- Harvard University and Harvard Medical School offer three summer programs for students from underrepresented groups. The Summer Honors Undergraduate Research Program ( SHURP) and the Summer Clinical and Translational Research Program (SCTRP) are geared toward biomedical research. The Four Directions Summer Research Program (FDSRP) is designed specifically for Native-American students.
- Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School offer the Summer Training in Academic Research and Scholarship (STARS) program.
- Summer Undergraduate Research Program for Minority Students (SURPMS) offers a 10-week summer research and enrichment program for underrepresented minority students interested in a M.D./Ph.D. or D.O./Ph.D degree.
- Cornell Medical College offers the Travelers Summer Research Fellowship Program for pre-medical students.
- Weill Cornell, Rockefeller, and Sloan-Kettering’s Gateways to the Laboratory Summer Program offers exciting research opportunities for students.
- The Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship program offers hands-on experience guided by a biomedical science faculty mentor.
- The Vanderbilt Summer Science Academy (VSSA) offers students of an underrepresented ethnic background (African-American, Hispanic-American, Native-American) biomedical research experiences.
- Yale University's BioSTEP Program is a 10 week summer program in mentored research with weekly seminars and workshops.
- The Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University offers an array of programs, both research and clinical, for undergraduates from underrepresented groups.
- The University of Cincinnati College of Medicine offers the Summer Premedical Enrichment Program (SPEP) and the Summer Research Scholarships.
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) offers a Summer Research Training Program.
- Oregon Health & Science University’s Equity Summer Research Program offers students the opportunity to engage in biomedical research.

Pre-Med Preparatory Programs
- UCLA Pre-Medical/Pre-Dental Enrichment Program (PREP) is an intensive, six-week summer program where promising students from disadvantaged backgrounds are exposed to the rigors of academic medicine and or dentistry.
- The Summer Medical and Dental Education Program is a free six-week summer medical and dental school preparatory program that offers personalized medical and dental school preparation, at twelve sites across the United States.
- Drexel University's CAMP is a six week, non-residential, tuition-free mini-medical school which focuses on group learning, team building, and peer support within a non-credit, organ based physiology curriculum.
- UCLA Re-Application Program (RAP) is a post baccalaureate program designed to assist students from disadvantaged and or/underserved backgrounds who applied and have been unsuccessful in gaining admissions to any U.S. medical school.
- The University of Michigan School of Dentistry and Medical School offers Profile for Success, emphasizing academic skills and MCAT/DAT preparation.
Dentistry
- Marquette University's Dental School invites disadvantaged students to apply to their summer program focusing on physical therapy, dentistry and physician assistantship.
Optometry
- Opto-Camp - UC Berkeley's School of Optometry offers a summer 'Opto-Camp' program to introduce underrepresented pre-health science majors to Optometry and to prepare them to be successful applicants to optometry school.
- Illinois College of Optometry offers the Focus on Your Future Summer Program and exposes undergraduates to the profession.
Public Health
- The Barbara Jordan Health Policy Scholars Program brings talented African American, Latino, American Indian/Alaska Native, and Asian/Pacific Islander college seniors and recent graduates to Washington, D.C., where they are placed in Congressional offices to learn about health policy.
- The University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Public Health offers research training opportunities to minority undergraduate, graduate and health professions students.
Osteopathic Medicine
- The Ohio University College of Osteopathic Medicine offers a Summer Scholars Program for multicultural and/or economically disadvantaged students who would like to take medical-school inspired coursework taught by OU-COM faculty.
